Trigger point

Trigger point release is available as an optional complementary technique within Lomi L omi massage.

What is a trigger point?

Trigger points are tight, sensitive areas that develop in the muscles and fascia, often perceived as muscle “knots.” In reality, they are parts of muscle fibers that remain in a chronically contracted state. They can develop due to overuse, poor posture, repetitive movements, or long-term physical and emotional stress.

The effect of trigger points on the body

When a tissue remains in a constant state of tension, local circulation and oxygen supply may decrease. The muscle can become sensitive, range of motion may be reduced, and referred pain can also appear.

Working with trigger points may help reduce pain, release physical tension, improve mobility, and support a deeper state of relaxation in the body.

Approach to the treatment

Trigger point release can be an intense experience. When the body encounters pain suddenly or too strongly, a protective response may occur: muscles may tighten, breathing may become shallow, and the nervous system may interpret the touch as stress.

For this reason, Lomi Lomi massage does not focus solely on the muscles. Instead, it gradually prepares the whole body and nervous system for deeper release.

Release and cooperation

Slow, rhythmic, flowing touch helps the body relax and reduces defensive responses. In this way, when a more sensitive trigger point is reached, release often does not happen through force, but through cooperation with the body.

Conscious breathing plays an important role: with slower exhalations, the muscles gradually soften, the area warms and relaxes, and tension begins to dissolve.

Approach

For me, trigger point work is not a separate technique, but an organically integrated part of Lomi Lomi massage, always guided by the body’s signals, boundaries, and current state.
